About

The Community Ambassador program is a new initiative at Milton Public Library (MPL)! We carefully select enthusiastic advocates of the library to help us spread the word about the benefit of using MPL to the wider community.

Our Community Ambassadors encourage everyone to be inspired by all that MPL has to offer. They also promote the library’s mission to empower the community to: Read. Learn. Create. Connect. by highlighting the diversity of resources, programs, and collections we have available to enhance the lives of Miltonians.

MPL’s current Community Ambassadors are Adam van Koeverden (Milton’s Member of Parliament) and Maddie Schizas (Canadian Olympic Figure Skater). Learn more about their background and influential role in the community below!

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming an MPL Community Ambassador, please call 1-905-875-2665 or email information@beinspired.ca.

MPL's Community Ambassadors

Adam van Koeverden

Milton's Member of Parliament

MP Adam van Koeverden is a dedicated community leader and one of Canada’s most accomplished athletes. He has represented Canada at four Summer Olympic Games, winning a gold, two silvers, and a bronze medal. He served as Canada’s flag bearer in Athens and Beijing, and won the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s top athlete in 2004.

Before entering politics, Adam worked as a managing consultant with Deloitte, and as a broadcaster, writer, and producer with CBC Sports.

He also served as Chair of the Canadian Olympic Athletes’ Commission and was a member of the Government of Canada Working Group on Gender Equity in Sport, promoting safe sport and addressing gender-based violence. He is a leading public speaker and a true ambassador for the Milton community.

Adam graduated as valedictorian with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from McMaster University. He lives in Milton with his dog, Cairo.

Maddie Schizas

Olympic Figure Skater

Maddie is a top female figure skater, representing Canada in the Beijing Olympics in 2021.

Maddie often trains at the Sherwood Community Centre and is an avid user and advocate of the Milton Public Library. Throughout the season, she encourages all teammates to get their library card and utilize the library services offered.

Aside from skating, Maddie is currently studying Urban Planning at the University of Waterloo and is passionate about music. She is an accomplished pianist and singer, as well as the enthusiastic music teacher to over a dozen young students. Maddie has also tried out the entertainment world by working as a skating double on the Netflix series Spinning Out (you can spot her as the jumping partner of skater Johnny Weir).
