Milton Public Library, or MPL, has been an integral part of the community since its inception in 1855. In recent years the Town of Milton has experienced rapid growth, particularly since 2000, and MPL currently serves a population of more than 100,000 through two physical libraries and the MPL website.

Part of MPL’s mandates as stated in the Library Master Plan are to “encourage the community to become more actively involved in community affairs”, and to “facilitate involvement for people at different life cycle and physical activity stages”. In order to achieve these objectives, MPL applied for and was the successful recipient of the Seniors Community Grant from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade. The grant was used to create the Milton Memories project. Milton Memories provides seniors in the community the necessary support to create a digital record of their memories of Milton, and creates a space where these memories can be shared with the entire community for the benefit of future generations. The digital memories provided are oral and / or written stories and are accompanied by any photos, historical documents, or ephemera that the seniors would like to provide. These Milton memories have captured the unique stories of the town’s longest residents, and will be an important legacy for the future as the town continues to change significantly from what it was even 15 years ago. The collection of memories is something that the library hopes to continuously add to for years to come.
