What Does the Board Do?

The Milton Public Library Board is a governing body established under the Ontario Public Libraries Act and is responsible for ensuring the long-term success, sustainability, and strategic direction of the Library. The Board provides governance and oversight by:

  • Setting strategic direction, policies, and priorities
  • Monitoring organizational performance and progress toward strategic goals and community outcomes
  • Providing financial oversight, accountability, and stewardship of public resources
  • Hiring, supporting, and evaluating the CEO
  • Advocating for strong, responsive public library services
  • Ensuring the Library remains responsive to the evolving needs of Milton’s growing and diverse community

The Board focuses on governance, while day-to-day operations are led by the CEO and library staff.

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome applicants with diverse backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and lived experiences who are passionate about community service, public libraries, and lifelong learning. We encourage applications from individuals who reflect the diversity of Milton’s community.

Experience in areas such as the following is considered an asset:

  • Governance or strategic planning
  • Finance or business
  • Legal, HR, or risk management
  • Technology and innovation
  • Community engagement and advocacy

Under the Ontario Public Libraries Act, a person is qualified to be appointed to a public library board if they:

  • Are at least 18 years of age
  • Are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Are a resident of the municipality or eligible service area served by the Board
  • Are not employed by the Milton Public Library or the Town of Milton

Board Members are expected to:

  • Attend and actively participate in Board meetings
  • Review meeting materials in advance
  • Support and advocate for Milton Public Library within the community
  • Attend library events and community engagements throughout the year
  • Participate in orientation and ongoing professional development opportunities
  • Act in the best interests of the Library and the community as a whole
  • Work collaboratively and respectfully with fellow Board Members and Library leadership

Commitment & Expectations

Board Members are expected to:

  • Support and advocate for Milton Public Library within the community
  • Attend library events and community engagements throughout the year
  • Participate in orientation and ongoing professional development opportunities
  • Act in the best interests of the Library and the community as a whole
  • Work collaboratively and respectfully with fellow Board Members and Library leadership

Board meetings are normally held on the third Wednesday of the month in: January, February, March, April, May, June, September, October and November. Additional meetings, workshops, or special meetings may be scheduled throughout the year as required.

Board Members are appointed for a 4-year term aligned with Municipal Council appointments and will be appointed by Town of Milton Council in December of 2026. Board Members are eligible for reappointment in accordance with the Board’s governance policies and Council appointment process.
